The Spirit of Art
Strictly of the Record
The huge art library a of the Center of Contemporary Art "Halle 14" in Leipzig is generated out of a constant flow of art books. They have once been applications for a very large art fair somewhere in Europe. The idea of this project was to work and produce a new piece out of this material.
On invitation of Halle 14, Ulrike Syha (writer), Andrew Hamiltion (composer) and
Hagen Betzwieser (ICO in PAR) met in Leipzig to investigate the archive and to fathom what could possibly be done with the provided material. Due to the complex and art political processes that surround and penetrate this archive, the only possibility to work with the material was to use the outer form of the storage units itself as a medium for the new work.Out of this epiphany, we built an approximately five meter high castle with a draw bridge. On top of this archival fortress we fly the red flag BRAVO which is usually used for battle ships when they carry explosives.
Inside the loaded walls of the castle lives the "Spirit of Art" which awakes for a short time when visitors enter. A ghostly projected text tells the story of this kingdom in three chapters. A giant red herring takes away attention from the explosive history which is burried inside the walls and the history of the construction.
