The idea was to bundle starlight with the lenses of a telescope, to directly light fire with it.

The State Observatory of Thüringen was asked to help and do the relevant mathematical calculations. The TV channel »Studio Bauhaus« spontaneously decided to support the experiment.

If we bundle sunlight through a magnifying glass we can get enough energy to light fire. If a star is just another sun it should be possible to do the same with big enough lenses, or maybe a large telescope.

Dr. Günther Wuchterl from the State Observatory calculated that a direct ignition is impossible at the moment. The lenses or the mirror should approx. have a diameter of 10 km but the largest telescope on earth currently has a diameter of 8 m.

By using an alternative way, the accumulation of starlight, it was finally possible to light propane gas (instead of the rather preferred hydrogen) with this accumulated star energy.

With the help of a highend solar panel, the star energy was captured and stored in a battery. The battery was later used to create a spark to light the gas.

At the end ot the show the ignition of the starfire happened outside the studio where already more than 40 people waited to get a copy of the flame which they than carried into the darkness of the nightly city.
